Essay Test: Poems of Our Climate

The following poem was submitted to highly selective universities in response to the question: Describe the world you come from:

Halted In the Middle: farmer’s market

For a moment I imagine
It is the corn,
The peas, tomatoes,
And here and there
A melon, striped yellow,
That make this music.
All around me
The people fade
To rows of green and orange—
The song, throbbing from them,
Lives alone, crouches low
Among potatoes, speaking to me
In a breathy whisper:
comealong onlytwo canihelpyou
 The words engulph me
thatonethere  illtakefive letsgetgoing
Dancing in the walkways,
Wrenching loose to echo
From the wet roof.
The sour cherries foxtrot
Under customers’ hands,
Losing themselves in the rhythm
And the rustle
Of brown paper bags.
Rising on the thick air
illbuyit goodmorning threedollars
A crescendo!—
The melody bursts
In fireworks of red and yellow,
Breaking over me in babbled music.
It scatters
In rows of beans
And silent blueberries.
